The NASCAR Cup Series will travel back to St. Louis, Missouri this week to compete at WWT Raceway (also known as Gateway Motorsports Park). The race last year was the first for the Cup Series at WWT Raceway. Six drivers were able to lead at least 20 laps and there really wasn’t a clear dominator in the race. Team Penske had the fastest cars, with Joey Logano winning the race, Ryan Blaney finishing fourth and Austin Cindric finishing 11th. The team also combined to lead 60 laps in the race. Will we see another Team Penske car in Victory Lane Sunday, or will another team find some speed at WWT Raceway? I am spreading my bets between all three manufactures this week.
Hendrick Motorsports has been one of the most dominant teams this year. I can see why the sportsbooks have made Kyle Larson and William Byron the favorites, but I am fading the team this week. Hendrick Motorsports did not have any drivers finish in the top-10 at WWT Raceway last year. They also failed to lead a lap and the four HMS drivers combined to score 6 Stage Points in the race. I am sure the HMS cars will be better this season, but it is hard to justify betting Larson and Byron based on last year’s results. Instead, I will focus on the Joe Gibbs, Team Penske and Richard Childress Racing cars for my betting slip Sunday.
DRAFTKINGS ODDS FOR WWT RACEWAY
* The odds are from DraftKings Sportsbook. The odds could change between the time of this article and the time you place your bet.
** The first number is the amount of money based on the second number (the amount of the wager). So if you bet $1 on Kyle Larson at 5-1 odds, you will win $5.
Here are my bets for WWT Raceway based on a $100 bankroll for the race….
MARTIN TRUEX JR. (10-1): Truex is one of the best drivers in the field on the flat tracks. He had one of the best cars at Richmond and he finished third at Martinsville. Truex was good at WWT Raceway last year too. He had the fifth-best Driver Rating, led the second-most laps and finished sixth in the race. I really expected Truex to have single-digit odds for this race (like 7-1). I will very happy to get him at 10-1 this week.
CHRISTOPHER BELL (10-1): I debated between Denny Hamlin and Bell for this bet. They both have 10-1 odds and Hamlin is probably the safer bet. I am going to Bell based on what he has done on the flat tracks this year and what Bell did at WWT Raceway last year. Bell finished sixth at Phoenix and fourth at Richmond earlier this season. Bell may have won the race at WWT Raceway last year if there was a long-run to the checkered flag. The No. 20 car was one of the fastest after 30 laps in the race. I will take a chance with C-Bell Sunday.
KYLE BUSCH (11-1): Busch is no stranger to Victory Lane at WWT Raceway. He won an Xfinity Series race at the track and he nearly won in the Cup Series race last year. Busch led a race high 66 laps, had the best Driver Rating and finished second in this race last year. I know he is driving for a different team this week, but I expect the results to be the same. Busch is one of my favorite bets Sunday at 11-1 odds.
RYAN BLANEY (12-1): Blaney finally got the monkey off his back and ended his 59 race winless streak. Now that he found Victory Lane, could he go back-to-back this week? I will bet he can. Blaney had the second fastest average green flag speed, and the third-best average running position at WWT Raceway last year. Blaney also finished second at the flat track race in Phoenix earlier this season. The No. 12 car should clearly be one of the cars to beat this week. Blaney is a good bet at 12-1 odds Sunday.
JOEY LOGANO (12-1): Logano is not having a great season. He only has three finishes in the top-five in the 14 races in 2023. The No. 22 car has a habit of coming out of nowhere and winning a race. That is what happened last year at WWT Raceway. Logano did not get the lead until there were 22 laps left in the race. He was able to hold off Kyle Busch and win the race at WWT Raceway. Can he do it again? I debated between Kevin Harvick and Logano for this pick, but Logano has won more races recently. I will bet he can win again Sunday.
LONGSHOT BETS: I am not betting any longshots this week, but there are two drivers who are worth consideration. ARIC ALMIROLA (40-1) is at his best on the flat tracks. He had the fourth-best Driver Rating and finished fifth at WWT Raceway last year. The other driver is COREY LAJOIE (40-1). He will be filling in for Chase Elliott in the No. 9 car. This could be a career changing race for LaJoie, so expect him to do everything possible to win the race Sunday.
Good luck Sunday!
