DFS PGA Picks for the Genesis Invitational

Facebooktwitter

The PGA Tour travels to Southern California this week for the Genesis Invitational. This will be the final tournament of the West Coast Swing before the tour travels to Mexico for the World Golf Championship. The field is absolutely stacked in this tournament as some of the best golfers in the world except the invitation from Tiger Woods to tee it up in L.A. The field includes Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Cantlay, Paul Casey, Jason Day, Tony Finau, Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Mr. Genesis Open Bubba Watson. Wow… This is Major Championship caliber field. It has Cash Contest written all over it.

Course Breakdown

Finally we are back to competing on one course for all four rounds. Riviera Country Club is par 71 which plays 7,322 yards in length. It is a narrow course with a lot of trees. It is a rather long course with most of the par 4s over 450 yards and the par 5s over 575 yards. Last week we saw a lot of irons off the tee but that will not be the case in Los Angeles. Golfers who can hit it long and straight are the ones you want in your lineups.

Key Stats for the Genesis Open

– Strokes Gained Tee to Green

– Strokes Gained Approach

– Par 5 Scoring

– Par 4 Scoring (450-500 yards)

– Birdie or Better %

There will be 120 golfers teeing it up Thursday with the top 65 and ties making the cut. The cut will be after two rounds and not three like last week. The field is so stacked that we almost have to have 6/6 golfers playing the weekend.

Genesis Open Strategy

The field this week is almost as strong as a field for a major. I will be playing a lot of Cash Contests this week. When the fields are as good as the one for the Genesis Invitational, it is easier to build a balanced lineup that should win your Cash Contests. I will even be playing my Cash Contest lineup in some tournaments this week. I like the balanced lineup that much in this tournament.

$11K – $10K Price Range

I really cannot say anything bad about the golfers priced over $10K this week. They are all studs and have a great chance to win this tournament. I recommend choosing one of these golfers to build your lineup around. I will have shares of all of them. I think it comes down to price (which golfer fits the lineup I am trying to construct) and ownership (which one should be lowest owned). I predict the ownership will be (from highest-to-lowest): 1. Rory McIlroy, 2. Dustin Johnson, 3. Tiger Woods, 4. Jon Rahm, 5. Justin Thomas.

Rory McIlroy $11,600 is now the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world. He is a monster off the tee and that should be a huge advantage this week. His iron game is solid too. It will all come down to his putter. McIlroy ranks high in Strokes Gained Putting, but when you separate it to Poa greens, he is 46th in the field. McIlroy has finished 4th, 20th and 20th in his three trips to the Genesis Invitational. I will use him in some of my Tournament Contest lineups.

Jon Rahm $11,200 is the golfer I will have the least amount of shares of from this range. I understand that he is in excellent form and he finished 9th in his only trip to Riviera Country Club, but it is hard for me to pay more for Rahm than Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods or Dustin Johnson. Another reason why I will not have a lot of exposure to Rahm is because we do not have a good relationship together. Whenever I roster him, he plays poorly. When I fade him, he wins. That means he will probably win this week.

Justin Thomas $11,000 is the golfer I like for a pivot from Rory McIlroy. Both golfers are in good form and both have good course history (Thomas finished 2nd at Riviera Country Club last year and 9th in 2018). I like Thomas slightly more than Rory because he ranks 4th in the field in putting on Poa greans while McIlroy is 46th and because of the ownership advantage we should get with J.T. If ownership was not an issue, I would use more of McIlroy.

Tiger Woods $10,400 is the host of this event and his name is on the invitations. That is probably the reason why we have such a loaded field. Woods has never won at Riviera Country Club but that does not mean he hasn’t played well. Woods finished 15th here last year and usually finishes in the top 15. The problem is that his price requires him to finish in the top-five to return value. I will play Woods in a few Tournament Contests this week, but I rather have Dustin Johnson at a cheaper price.

Dustin Johnson $10,000 will be the golfer I will have in a lot of my Tournament Contest lineups. I love his price, but I think that will be a popular narrative this week from the smart Fantasy Golf players. For that reason he will be my top golfer for Single-Entry Contests and I will play Justin Thomas in my Multi-Entry Tournament Contests. D.J. is a horse for the course. He has finished 9th, 16th, 1st, 4th, 2nd, 2nd and 4th in his last six trips to Riviera Country Club. Not too shabby.

$9K Price Range

It is risky to fade all five golfers priced over $10K but I will be doing it in some of my Tournament Contests to be contrarian. Fading these golfers allows me to select three golfers from the $9K range. Many of these golfers have the same upside as the elite golfers priced in the $10K range. It is risky, but I will take my chances.

Patrick Cantlay $9,800 is from Long Beach, California so he should feel right at home at Riviera Country Club. He is one of the most accurate golfers off the tee and he ranks high in Strokes Gained Putting on Poa greens. Cantlay finished 15th here last year and 4th in 2018. He has not missed a cut all season but Cantlay hasn’t been lighting up the DK scoreboard either. I like him more for Single-Entry Tournament Contests and Cash Contests this week.

Bubba Watson $9,600 is Mr. Riviera Country Club. This is by far the best course on tour for Watson. He has won 3 of the last 5 Genesis Opens. Watson has a history of showing up at Riviera Country Club in poor form and then dominating the field. This year he enters the tournament in excellent form. Watson finished 3rd at the Waste Management Open and 6th at the Farmers Insurance Open. He is a good pick for both Cash and Tournament Contests this week.

Xander Schauffele $9,200 is another Southern California golfer who typically lights it up on Poa greens. He has played the Genisis Invitational twice and he finished 9th and 15th. I was disappointed in his missed cut at the Farmers last month but this course suite his game much better. I will use Schauffele in some of my Tournament Contest and his price is cheap enough to make him a good Cash Contest play as well.

Tony Finau $9,100 will be in almost all of my Cash Contest lineups. I like everything about him this week. His form is good (Finau finished 2nd, 6th and 14th in his three tournaments in 2020), his course history is good (Finau finished 2nd and 15th over the last two seasons at Riviera Country Club) and he ranks 8th in my key stats. I expect his ownership to be high so I will use him in Single-Entry Tournament Contests and Cash Contests this week.

Adam Scott $9,000 has not played in a while but do not worry about it. The Genisis Invitational is always his first event and he always plays well. Scott has not missed a cut at Riviera Country Club since 2010 (He is 6 for 6 in the last decade). Scott won the last time he teed it up in December (Australian Masters). He ranks No. 1 in the field in Strokes Gained on par 4s over 450 yards. If he can get his putter dialed in, he could win this tournament.

$8K Price Range

Marc Leishman $8,700 won the last time he teed it up (Torrey Pines). The Farmers Insurance Open is a similar course since they are both long and have Poa greens. Leishman also finished 4th in the Genisis Invitational last year so there is a lot to like about him. He tends to be either really good or really bad though and for that reason he will be a Tournament Contest only play for me this week.

Justin Rose $8,500 is the best bargain in the field this week. I just do not understand DK’s thinking when they priced 10th ranked golfer in the world at $8,500. I understand he missed the cut at Torrey Pines but we have to remember that he flew on a plan 24 hours from Singapore to San Diego the night before the tournament. Rose will be a lock for my Cash Contests but he will be too highly owned for Tournaments this week.

Collin Morikawa $8,100 will be another golfer I will play a lot in my Cash Contests this week. If you need a golfer who can simply make the cut, Marikawa is your guy. He has not missed a cut all season and in fact… He has never missed a cut on the PGA Tour. Stats like that scream “Play Me!” in Cash Contests. Morikawa is also a Southern California golfer so he is comfortable on Poa greens.

$7K Price Range

Sergio Garcia $7,800 and Matt Kuchar $7,800 are about the same player this week. Both golfers have an excellent chance of making the cut but both golfers have a slim chance of winning the tournament. For that reason I will use Garcia and Kuchar as core golfers for my Cash Contests and fade them in my Tournament Contests.

J.B. Holmes $7,700 is not only a horse for the course, but he is also in great form. Holmes won this tournament last year and the field was equally stacked. He has also finished in the top 16 in his last three west coast tournaments (Pebble Beach, TPC Scottsdale and Torrey Pines). Holmes is simply playing too well right now to fade. I will use him in both Cash and Tournament Contests this week.

Cameron Smith $7,500 is a history of playing well at Riviera Country Club. The Australian has never missed a cut in this tournament (Smith is 4 for 4) and he finished 6th in the Genisis Invitational in 2018. Smith missed his last cut at the Waste Management Open in Phoenix, but do not worry about it. His game fits the courses in Southern California since he putts well on Poa greens.

Max Homa $7,500 has been playing steady golf. He has made his last seven cuts and he finished 37th at Riviera Country Club last year. I doubt Homa will contend for a top-20 finish Sunday but he should make the cut and score enough points at the bottom of your lineup to help you roster cash in this week.

Alex Noren $7,300 is a golfer I will take a few chances with this week. He used to be a top-20 ranked golfer in the world and then he fell off a cliff. Noren is starting to regain his old form so I think it is smart to play him before the public all hopes on his bandwagon. Noren has made every cut this season and he finished 16th in his only trip to Riviera Country Club. He should be a good play this week.

Joaquin Niemann $7,300 is a great ball-striker and Riviera Country Club is a ball-strikers course. The golfers are going to need to be dialed in with their long irons and Niemann ranks 7th in the field in Strokes Gained on par 4s over 450 yards. It will all come down to putting for Niemann this week.

Correy Conners $7,000 will be one of my cheap golfers I will use a lot this week. He is deadly accurate off the tee and his long irons are pretty good too. Conners has made 7 cuts in a row this season so he is in good form. This is his first trip to Riviera Country Club so that makes him a bit risky, but he should figure it out quickly. Just keep hitting fairways and greens and he should be OK.

$6K Price Range

There are a few golfers who can roster from the $6K range who will allow us to pay up for the golfers priced over $10K this week. The golfers I like include Carlos Ortiz $6,800, Sung Kang $6,700, Patrick Rodgers $6,800 and Lanto Griffin $6,800.
