The MENCS Playoffs are flying bye as two races are in the books. Now the series will compete at the track everyone has been worried about.. The Charlotte Roval. Teams have practiced getting around the tricky half road-course, half oval track, but no teams have been on the track with other cars. This is either going to be the coolest race NASCAR has had or a complete disaster. The race this with is Sunday at 1pm ET on NBC.
I am not worried about allocations in Group A because there is plenty of talent to get you through the final 8 races. I would save your allocations with Kurt Busch, Clint Bowyer, Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney in Group B and Alex Bowman and William Byron in Group C. These drivers are all good picks this week but this race is too risky to use them at. I would save them for more predictable races unless you have 3 or more allocations with them.
Martin Truex Jr. (4): Truex is my pick to win Sunday. The No. 78 team did nork on their qualifying setup in Friday’s practice so they were a little behind the competition. Truex will start 13th and he should be able to make it to the front from there. Truex was 5th fastest in final practice and the team liked their car. We need a driver who will not over-drive the car and stay out of trouble. Truex is good at keeping all four tires on the track.
Group A Driver Rankings: 1) Martin Truex Jr. 2) Kyle Busch 3) Brad Keselowski 4) Kevin Harvick 5) Jimmie Johnson 6) Kyle Larson 7) Joey Logano 8) Denny Hamlin
AJ Allmendinger (7): Allmendinger is not happy about being released from JTG Daugherty Racing. I saw two interviews this week with Allmendinger and he said, “I plan to win the pole and do my best to win this race and prove I belong in this series. I have nothing to lose. I have no job so I am not worried about moving people out of the way to win the race.” No driver has more experience on this type of track than Allmendinger. I know he is hard to trust but I am willing to roll the dice with the No. 47 team Sunday.
Jamie McMurray (5): McMurray always runs well at the road courses. Kyle Larson and AJ Allmendinger both said this track races a lot like the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona race. No driver in the garage has more experience in that race than McMurray and he has performed really well on the Daytona road course. McMurray qualified 8th and he has nothing to lose too. I think he will surprise people Sunday.
Group B Driver Rankings: 1) Chase Elliott 2) Kurt Busch 3) Clint Bowyer 4) AJ Allmendinger 5) Jamie McMurray 6) Daniel Suarez 7) Ryan Blaney 8) Erik Jones 9) Paul Menard 10) Aric Almirola
Michael McDowell (5): McDowell has been my go-to-driver at the road courses. He grew up racing on these types of tracks and he said on NASCAR America, “I have been waiting all season for this race. This track suites my driving style better than any other track.” McDowell was 8th fastest in final practice with the 2nd best long run speed. He really likes his car this week and I do to.
Group C Driver Rankings: 1) Alex Bowman) Michael McDowell 3) Chris Buescher 4) William Byron 5) Daniel Hemric
Good luck this week!
