Driver Rankings for Atlanta

Facebooktwitter

The Cup Series will head back to the Eastern Time Zone to compete at Atlanta Motor Speedway Sunday. This track produces some of the best racing of the season and fans will be treated to two races on the worn-out surfaces this year. The Cup Series will return to Atlanta in July to compete on what is sure to be a hot, slick track. Both races should be awesome for fans to see. The Folds of Honor Quick Trip 500 can be seen Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on Fox.

Tires, tires, tires will be the theme of Sunday’s race. Atlanta is a worn-out track that has a lot of mood swings. The tires wear out faster at Atlanta than any track on the schedule. There are three grooves to race in and they come and go throughout the race. Drivers have to constantly search for grip and maintain their tire-wear at the same time. Some drivers are very good at this skill, while others will be begging to make a pit stop after 30 laps. This is one of the easier races to predict because there is a wide margin between the haves and have not’s at Atlanta. We need to capitalize on this race and make sure we have all of the drivers with the best track history in our lineup Sunday.

I put a strong emphasis on the past results at Atlanta for my rankings this week. I looked at the results from last year and the three races at Atlanta using the current aero package. I also used the stats from the races at Homestead and Las Vegas this year, with a slight edge to the Homestead race. Finally, I used momentum from the last three races (Phoenix, Las Vegas and Homestead) so that we have the drivers who are running well right now in our lineups.
