The second race in each round of the playoffs is very important. If a driver failed to score many points in the first playoff race, the drive needs to have a good race at Richmond to prevent a “must win” situation at Bristol next week. If a driver finished up front at Darlington last week, they simply need to play it safe Saturday night at Richmond so they do not dig a hole they will need to climb out of at Bristol. It should be fun to watch. The Federated Auto Parts 400 can be seen Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN.
The September race at Richmond Raceway is usually the second trip to the track for the Cup Series. The April race in Virginia was canceled because of the Coronavirus so the race Saturday night will be their first laps at Richmond in the new 2020 aero package (750 HP, smaller spoiler and splitter). We do have some data to figure out who the best drivers will be.
I am using the Driver Rankings and Average Green Flag Speeds from the races at Phoenix and New Hampshire. Both of those tracks are short, flat tracks like Richmond. Teams will need a similar setup for the race and Goodyear is bringing the same tire that was used in those races. I will also factor in past results from Richmond, but I will focus on the 2018 results since this aero package is similar to what was used in those races.
