Driver Rankings for Sonoma

The NASCAR Cup Series will head back to Northern California for the first time in two years. The pandemic forced the race at Sonoma to be canceled last year so some of the young drivers in the series have very limited experience at this technical track. The racing in wine country is always good and I expect the same this week. The Toyota Save Mart 350 can be seen Sunday at 4 p.m. on FS1.

Sonoma is not like the other road course races. The crew chiefs are just as important as the drivers this week. The key to winning at Sonoma is a combination of a fast car and perfect pit strategy. How many stops for fuel a driver makes often determines the winner. Joe Gibbs Racing is usually good at this track and I expect the same Sunday.

I used the stats from the Road Course races this season (Daytona and COTA) for the picks this week but I did not put too much weight on them. The race at COTA turned into the “Circus” of the Americas. The road course race at Daytona is nothing like Sonoma, but I still considered the data for the rankings. Most of the data for the picks this week is based on track history at Sonoma. This is a unique track and some teams are just better than others in Northern California.
