Early Week Driver Rankings for WWT Raceway

The NASCAR Cup Series will take the green flag in their 15th race of the season this week at WWT Raceway. This will be the second race for the Cup Series just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. The tracks are starting to heat up and so is the racing as the teams try to position themselves for a run for the 2023 Championship. The Enjoy Illinois 300 can be seen Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

The race at WWT Raceway (of Gateway Motorsports Park) is the toughest race to handicap this season. The track is a 1.25-mile flat track. The track most similar to WWT Raceway is Phoenix and New Hampshire. The Cup Series will use a different aero package from what they had at Phoenix and the cars have not competed at New Hampshire yet. Richmond is also a flat track, but it is ½-mile smaller than WWT Raceway. So, do we use the data from Phoenix and Richmond or do we use the data from the other races using the Intermediate aero package (Las Vegas, Kansas, and Charlotte)?

The Fords dominated the race at WWT Raceway last year, but they haven’t show any speed until the Coca-Cola 600. Hendrick Motorsports struggled at WWT Raceway last year, but they have been dominant in the races using the intermediate aero package. There are a lot of variables which make this race tough to predict.

I am using the stats from the race at WWT Raceway last year and combining it with the data from the races at Phoenix and Richmond. I think the flat track races will be more helpful in predicting which teams will have speed this week then the data from the larger intermediate track races. I cannot ignore that data though, so I will combine the stats from Las Vegas, Kansas and Charlotte and add it to the formula used to help predict this race.
