Fantasy Golf Picks for Zurich Classic

Facebooktwitter

The PGA Tour will travel to Louisiana this week for the Zurich Classic. The field must be complete crap following The Masters and an elevated event at the RBC Heritage, right? Well, that is not the case. The Zurich Classic will feature 12 of the top-30 golfers in the World Golf Rankings, but there is a catch. These golfers will not be playing stroke-play against each other. The golfers will be paired together and compete in four-ball, best ball and alternate shot competitions. There will be 80 teams (2 golfers of each team) and the top 33 teams will make the cut after Friday’s round (40%). I am not a big fan of this tournament and it is not great for DFS contests, but I will throw some money at it and hope to win some cash this week.

DRAFTKINGS SCORING FOR ZURRICH CLASSIC

– All 160 golfers will be listed in the player pool on DraftKings but you will not be allowed to select two golfers from the same team. So Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are paired together so you can only use Cantlay or Schaffeler in your lineup.

– Each golfer will receive the same points as his teammate. So if Cantlay scores 70 DK points, Schauffeler will also receive 70 DK points.

– If a golfer does not compete in an event, he will not receive any points.

So does this sound confusing. Well, it is and that is why I am not a big fan of throwing too much money at this tournament this week.

COURSE BREAKDOWN

The course this week is TPC Louisiana. It is part of the TPC Network of courses so it is similar to TPC Sawgrass where THE PLAYERS is played, TPC River Highlands that hosts the Travelers Championship and TPC Boston which hosts the Northern Trust at the end of the season. I used the golfer’s course history at those courses for my picks this week.

This Pete Dye style course tests each aspect of a golfer’s game. The course plays 7,400 yards in length. There are over 100 bunkers strategically placed to ensure the golfers will have to use the right strategy to get their shots on the greens.

This is the week to stick with golfers who are accurate off the tee and accurate with their approach shots. It will also be very important to be strategic with your shots because ball placement is everything at TPC Louisiana. The scores will likely be really low, but some golfers who are too aggressive could post high scores.

ZURRICH CLASSIC STRATEGY

The pricing on DraftKings is extremely tight this week. It will be difficult to build a competitive lineup without using a “stars and scrubs” construction format. It is also tough to get 6/6 golfers through to the weekend when you are digging through the trash for golfers for your teams. I will be building mostly “stars and scrubs” lineups and hope the value picks I use pay off.

The winning lineups for this event have looked the same the last three years. The lineup typically consists of one high-priced team and the rest of the lineup is filled with $7K priced teams.

FanDuel doesn’t have any contest listed for the Zurich Classic right now. I will add some lineups if they post some contests for this tournament.

DRAFTKINGS CASH CONTEST

XANDER SCHAUFFELE /PATRICK CANTLAY ($11,200): Schauffele and Cantlay rank No. 1 in all of the key stats and their history in this tournament is outstanding. They finished fourth last year, won the Zurrich Classic in 2022 and finished 11th in 2021. I do not mind starting my Cash Contest lineup with the best team in the field.

DAVID LIPSKY /AARON RAI ($8,400): I like having teams that a history of playing well together. This is the third time that Lipsky and Rai have played the Zurich Classic together. They finished 13th last year and fourth in 2022. Lipsky and Rai are a great mid-tier team for your lineup.

DAVID THOMPSON / ANDREW NOVAK ($8,100): These two are not great golfers alone, but they should be good as a team. Thompson and Novak have finished in the top-25 nine times this year. Thompson’s strength is Novak’s weakness and Novak’s strength is Thompson weakness. Put them together and you have a good team. I doubt they will win, but they should finish in the top-20.

TAYLOR MOORE / MATTHEW NESMITH ($7,700): This is the third year in a row that Moore and NeSmith are playing together in the Zurich Classic. They finished fourth last year and fourth in 2022. Moore and NeSmith are probably the best value on the slate this week so they get a spot in my lineup.

JUSTIN LOWER / DYLAN WU ($7,400): Lower and Wu played together in the Zurich Classic in 2022 and they finished 10th. Both golfers are trending in the right direction. Wu has made four cuts in a row and seven of his last 10 on the PGA Tour. Lower has made nine of his 12 cuts, including a fourth-place finish last week. These are two solid golfers who should have success this week.

MATHIAS SCHMID / ALEX SMALLEY ($7,200): Can Schmid carry this team? He has been playing good golf lately and Schmid would be priced in the $8K range if he had a decent partner. Smalley is not that bad though. He ranks decent in the key stats, but misses cuts in the number. Schmid has finished 10th, 26th, 17th, 21st, 69th and 11th in his last six starts on the PGA Tour. This team should score well if they get any help from Smalley this week.

DRAFTKINGS TOURNAMENT CONTEST LINEUP

SAHITH THEEGALA /WILL ZALATORIS ($11,100): I will pivot off of the popular Cantlay/ Schauffele and the McIlory / Lowry teams and take a chance with Theegala and Zalatoris. When I ran the key stats I looked at each golfer and then combined their rank with their partner’s ranking. So Theegala ranked No. 5 in the key stats and Theegala ranked No. 8 to give them a combined total of 13. That is second best behind Cantlay and Schauffele. The Tee-to-Green game for Theegala and Zlatoris is the best is the field. I think they have a good chance of winning Sunday.

TOM HOGE / MVAERICK MCNEALY ($9,400): I combined the key stats for Hoge and McNealy too. I was surprised to see that they ranked No. 5 in the field. Both of these golfers rank in the top-10 in SG Tee-to-Green. Hoge has been playing good golf all season and McNealy is on a hot streak right now. They should score well in this tournament.

NICK TAYLOR / ADAM HADWIN ($9,200): These two Canadians have a history of playing well together. They finished second in this tournament last year and Hadwin said he has been playing a lot with Taylor this year as they get ready for the President’s Cup which will be played in Montreal Canada. Both are in good form and rank high in the key stats. They are a good pick to win Sunday.

NICK HARDY / DAVIS RILEY ($7,500): So, can these two golfers play well together? Well, they won this tournament last year, so I will take a chance with them this year. They not only won last year, Hardy and Riley broke the record for the lowest score ever (-30) in the Zurich Classic. $7,500 seems too cheap for a team that won last year.

JUSTIN SUH / RICO HOEY ($6,900): This is another team that sucks individually, but should be decent together. Suh ranks 135th in the Field in SG Tee-to-Green, but he ranks 7th in SG Putting. Hoey ranks 10th in SG Tee-to-Green and 134th in SG Putting. They are totally opposite players. I have a gut feeling that they will play well as a team.

PARKER COODY / PIERCSON COODY ($6,600): Can you have any better chemistry than playing with your brother. The Coody Brothers have been playing golf together for their entire lives. They said that they have been preparing for this tournament for a long time. The stats do not like the Coody Brothers this week, but this pick is about team chemistry and the motivation to play well this week. I just need the Coody Brothers to make the cut at $6,600.
