Fantasy Live Picks for Sonoma

Facebooktwitter

The Cup Series will go road course racing again this week when they take the green flag at Sonoma Raceway. This will be the second road course race for the Cup Series in 2024 (Sonoma was the first). The racing is typically pretty good in wine country, but the races are pretty short. Be sure to be on time this week, because you may miss a good race if you blink. The Toyota / Save Mart 350 can be seen Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

Everyone knows that the Fantasy Live picks have been good for over a decade, but this year has been outstanding. The picks scored 253 points last week at Gateway. They are now averaging 224 points per race. Anything over 200 is awesome. The picks are ranked 79th out of 352K entries. I will do my best to keep the picks climbing in the overall standings this week.

CUP SERIES PRACTICE

The Cup Series had a unique schedule for the Toyota / Save Mart 350. The teams practiced Friday and then they had their qualifying session Saturday evening. Sonoma is a 2.52-mile track, so the drivers did not have a lot of time to make long runs in practice. Track position has been very important in the Gen-7 car and in the races at Sonoma. I will be focusing my picks more on the qualifying speed then the practice speed this weekend.

Here are the practice speeds for the Toyota / Save Mart 350…

FANTASY LIVE PICKS FOR SONOMA

KYLE LARSON (5): Larson is going to be tough to beat at his home track. The No. 5 car was the fastest in race trim and he posted the fastest speed on the five-lap speed chart. Larson qualified fifth for the race, so he has the speed and the track position to score a lot of Stage Points and win the race Sunday. He dominated the race in Sonoma in 2021. “Yung Money” may do it again Sunday.

CHASE ELLIOTT (3): Elliott used to be the master of the road courses in the Cup Series. He has been good, but not great on these tracks in the Gen-7 car. It looks like Elliott is starting to get his mojo back. Elliott posted the fifth-fastest speed in practice and qualified fourth for the race. He finished fifth, eighth and second in his last three races at Sonoma. Elliott should finish in the top-five, with the upside to win the race Sunday.

WILLIAM BYRON (4): It will be tough to fade Byron this weekend. He has been the best road course race of the last 10 months. He won the race at COTA earlier this year, finished second at the Charlotte Roval in the playoffs last year and won the race at Watkins Glen. The No. 24 car looks fast again this weekend. Byron was 24th in practice, but his team spent a lot of time working on the car. He was the third-fastest on the long-runs and he qualified sixth for the race. I will take my chances with Willy-B Sunday.

JOEY LOGANO (5): Logano often gets overlooked at the road courses but he has been pretty good. He finished 11th at COTA earlier this year, fifth at the Charlotte Roval in the playoffs last year and 10th at Watkins Glen. He also finished third at Sonoma last year. The No. 22 car looks fast again this weekend. Logano won the pole, so he has the track position to score a lot of Stage Points and finish in the top-five. Logano has a history of winning races on repaves. It looks like he may do it again Sunday.

TYLER REDDICK (4): There is no doubt that Reddick is one of the best road course racers in NASCAR. There is no doubt that his luck at Sonoma has been terrible. Reddick finished 19th, 35th and 33rd in his three races at Sonoma. He did not finish that far back in the field because his car was slow or because he does not have talent. Reddick simply was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He had the second-fastest car on the long-runs in practice and he qualified second for the race. I will play Reddick and if he has problems again I will put Reddick in the Garage.

(GARAGE PICK) ALEX BOWMAN (8): Bowman often gets overlooked on the road course because his teammates are so good. Bowman has not won on a road course yet, but he does have a habit of finishing in the top-10. Bowman finished four of his last six road course races in the top-eight. The No. 48 car qualified eighth. Bowman should be a safe pick to have in the Garage Sunday.

* I will switch out KYLE LARSON for ROSS CHASTAIN if the No. 5 team has to fix their car and Larson has to start in the back.

Good luck and be sure to follow me on X (Twitter) @MrFantasyNASCARI will send out a Tweet during the race to let you know if I plan to swap out one of my drivers for my Garage pick.
