Fantasy NASCAR Preview #9: Joey Logano

2017 RECAP: The 2017 season was a HUGE disappointment for the No. 22 team. Joey Logano was the best driver in the first nine races of the season. He finished eight of the first nine races in the top six, including a win at Richmond. That is when it all went downhill for Logano. NASCAR took away his win at Richmond and whatever advantage he had over the field. Logano struggled to finish in the top 10 in many of the races leading up to the playoffs. He missed the playoffs and finished 17th in the point standings.

2018 Preview: Joey Logano is one of the elite young drivers in the sport. It is hard to imagine that he will miss the playoffs again in 2018. The team did not make any changes over the offseason. Todd Gordon will once again be calling the shots on top the pit box. Gordon works well with Logano so there really was no need to make a change. Logano will have new teammates in 2018. Ryan Blaney will join Team Penske Racing and Paul Menard will race the No. 21 car for Wood Brothers Racing. It never hurts to have more drivers to share info with. I expect Logano to have a bounce back year. He should win a couple of races and have at least 20 finishes in the top 10.

Joey Logano has always been one of the best drivers for your fantasy team on the Intermediate tracks (1.5-mile and 2-mile ovals) but that was not the case last year. The Team Penske Racing drivers complained last year that Toyota had an advantage in aerodynamics. If that is true, it will not get any better in 2018. Chevy will run a new Camaro chassis and the word in the garage is that it has the same aerodynamic advantages as the Toyota. Ford needs to step up their game and find some speed. If they can, Logano will be a top pick on the Intermediate tracks in 2018. I will wait to see how he is running before I decide to use him in my lineups.

The Fords may be behind the competition in aerodynamics but they have the advantage in horsepower. The Roush-Yates engines always run well on the Superspeedways (Daytona and Talladega). Ford has won the last seven races on the Superspeedways. Logano has three trips to Victory Lane at these tracks, including a win in the 2015 Daytona 500. Logano ranked 7th in fantasy value at the Superspeedways last year. The No. 22 will be one of the cars to beat again in 2018. Make sure Logano is at the top of your list when the series competes at the Superspeedways.

Joey Logano has been very good at the Flat tracks (Phoenix, Richmond, Martinsville and Loudon) in his career. He performed good but not great at these tracks in 2017. Logano ranked 11th in fantasy value at the Flat tracks. Logano is very good at Richmond. He has finished eight consecutive races in the top 10 at the track. He has been good in his career at Phoenix but had no luck at the track last year. Logano finished four of his last six races at the track in the top six. Loudon has been a good track for Logano as well. He has finished six of the last seven races at the track in the top 11. The only Flat track I would not recommend using Logano at is Martinsville. He is one of the best at qualifying (won four of the last six poles) but he usually falls back in the races.

Joey Logano has been good but not great at the Steep tracks (Bristol, Dover and Darlington) the last two years. Logano ranked 11th in fantasy value at these tracks last year. Bristol has been his best track. He has an average finishing position of 7.8 with 290 laps led in the last five races in Thunder Valley. Logano has been very inconsistent at Dover and Darlington. The only Steep track I would recommend using Logano on your fantasy team is at Bristol.

Joey Logano has a lot of fantasy value at the Road Courses (Sonoma and Watkins Glen). He had a down year at the tracks (finished both races outside the top 10) last year but I expect him to bounce back in 2018. He is better at Watkins Glen than he is at Sonoma but he can be considered for your fantasy team at both tracks.

Best Tracks to for Joey Logano: 1) Indianapolis, 2) Richmond, 3) Chicago, 4) California, 5) Homestead
