Fantasy NASCAR Preview for Martinsville

Facebooktwitter

The NASCAR Cup Series will join the Xfinity Series and the Truck Series at Martinsville Speedway this weekend. The Cup Series competed on three short tracks in the last four races (Phoenix, Bristol and Richmond). Now it is time for the Cup Series to complete the short track portion of their schedule with a trip to Martinsville for some hot dogs and aggressive driving. All three races should be pretty good if you like tight racing and hot tempers.

MARTINSVILLE SCHEDULE

Friday will be a busy day at Martinsville Speedway. The Truck Series and Xfinity Series will have a short practice before they qualify for their races. The Truck Series will race Friday night and the Xfinity Series will race Saturday night. The Cup Series will practice and qualify for their race Saturday afternoon. The Cup Series is scheduled to race Sunday afternoon on FS1 (not FOX this week).

Here is the schedule for the races at Martinsville…

* Practice and qualifying is scheduled for 4:35 p.m. ET Saturday. I will try to get some of the picks posted after qualifying Saturday evening, but I have a Wrestle Mania Party to go to Saturday night. I will try to get the One & Done, Driver Group Game and Fantasy Live picks posted Saturday evening, but whatever picks are not posted Saturday, will be posted early Sunday morning.

RACE RECAP AT MARTINSVILLE

NASCAR last raced at Martinsville last October. The Toyota’s showed up with a lot of speed. Martin Truex Jr. won the pole, Ty Gibbs qualified 2nd, Denny Hamlin qualified 4th, Bubba Wallace qualified 6th and Christopher Bell qualified 7th. Hamlin dominated the first half of the race. The No. 11 car led 156 laps, won Stage 1 and finished 2nd in Stage 2. Ryan Blaney took the lead on lap 195. He dominated the rest of the race. Blaney led 145 laps, finished 2nd in Stage 1, won Stage 2 and went to Victory Lane. Hamlin and Blaney were the two best drivers in the race last year and they have dominated the races in the Gen-7 car at Martinsville.

FANTASY PREVIEW FOR MARTINSVILLE

The Toyota’s have been the kings of the short tracks this year and they were very good in the last race at Martinsville. The Toyota’s led 298 of the 312 laps at Phoenix earlier this season. They also led 256 of the 400 laps at Richmond last week. Denny Hamlin won the short, flat track races at the Clash at the Coliseum and the race at Richmond. Christopher Bell won the race at Phoenix. The Toyota’s are going to be tough to beat Sunday at Martinsville. Who will be the team that will compete with the Toyota’s for the win Sunday?

The Fords were really good at Martinsville last year. Ryan Preece led 135 laps and Chase Briscoe led 109 laps for Stewart-Haas Racing in the April race at Martinsville last year. Ryan Blaney led 145 and went to Victory at Martinsville last October. Joey Logano finished 2nd and 5th in the two races at Martinsville last year.

The race this week “should” be a battle between Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Penske. They have been the two best teams in the Gen-7 car at Martinsville. It is tough to count out Kyle Larson from Hendrick Motorsports. He has been fast at the short, flat tracks this season and he won the April race at Martinsville last year. You should be in good shape if you stick to the Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Penske drivers this week and sprinkle in a few shares of Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson.

FANTASY STATS FOR MARTINSVILLE

Martinsville is a rhythm race track. There is an art to setting up your competitors for a pass at this short track and some drivers are better at it than others. Track history means more at Martinsville than it does at any track on the schedule. We need to look at the data from the four races at Martinsville in the Gen-7 car for our picks this week. The Cup Series will use a new aero package, but it is not expected to change the racing much.

Here are the stats from the four races at Martinsville in the Gen-7 car sorted by Driver Ranking…
