Fantasy NASCAR Preview for Pocono

Facebooktwitter

The NASCAR Cup Series will join the Xfinity Series and the Truck Series at Pocono Raceway this weekend. They call this track the “Tricky Triangle” because it has three completely different corners and it is tough for the crew chiefs to hit on the perfect setup for Pocono. I call it the “Tricky Triangle” because it is tough to pick a winning Fantasy NASCAR lineup because there are often wrecks at the end of the race and fuel mileage is a factor in who goes to Victory Lane. It should be fun to see how the three races play out this weekend.

POCONO SCHEDULE

We get a full weekend of racing this week in the “Honeymoon Capitol of the United States.” The Truck Series will practice and qualify Friday afternoon and then race Friday evening. The Xfinity Series will practice and qualify Saturday morning and then race Saturday afternoon. The Cup Series will practice and qualify Saturday afternoon and then race Sunday afternoon. It will be a busy weekend at the Tricky Triangle.

Here is the schedule for the races at Pocono…

RACE RECAP AT POCONO

William Byron won the pole at Pocono last year. The No. 24 car led the most laps (60). He raced his teammate (Kyle Larson) for the lead in the first two Stages. Byron lost his track position because of a bad pit stop and finished 14th. Larson led the second-most laps (24), won Stage 2 and finished 20th. Denny Hamlin fought Larson for the lead in the final laps and Hamlin put Larson into the wall. It was a shitty move by Hamlin, but it is nothing new for the No. 11 and No. 5 cars. There have been two races at Pocono in the Gen-7 car and Hamlin should have won both of them. His car was disqualified after he went to Victory Lane in 2022 because of tape illegally placed on the front of the car.

The best drivers in the race included William Byron, Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, Ty Gibbs, Kevin Harvick and Bubba Wallace

Stage 1 Results: 1. Joey Logano, 2. Martin Truex Jr., 3. Denny Hamlin, 4. Tyler Reddick, 5. AJ Allmendinger, 6. Michael McDowell, 7. Bubba Wallace, 8. Justin Haley, 9. Chris Buescher, 10. Erik Jones

Stage 2 Results: 1. Kyle Larson, 2. Ty Dillon, 3. William Byron, 4. Denny Hamlin, 5. Alex Bowman, 6. Tyler Reddick, 7. Ty Gibbs, 8. Ryan Blaney, 9. Bubba Wallace, 10. Martin Truex Jr.

FANTASY STATS FOR POCONO

Pocono is unlike any track on the schedule. It is 2.5-mile, flat track with three completely different corners. It is almost impossible for a team to get their car to drive perfectly through all three corners. The crew chiefs need to decide what corner to give up speed in to gain speed in another corner. The most similar tracks to Pocono are Indianapolis and Michigan, but the Cup Series has not competed at those tracks yet. I will use the stats from the first two races at Pocono in the Gen-7 car and the Green Flag Speed from the large intermediate tracks this year to handicap this race. We should have a better idea of which drivers have the cars to beat after practice and qualifying Saturday.

Here are the stats from the two races at Pocono in the Gen-7 car and the races on the large intermediate tracks in 2024, sorted by Driver Rating…
