NASCAR will compete on a road course for the third time in 2021 when they travel to Sonoma Raceway. There seven road courses on the schedule this year, but they are all completely different. COTA and Sonoma are more technical than the rovals at Daytona, Charlotte and Indianapolis. Watkins Glenn and Mid Ohio are high-speed road courses that has a bit of technical corners on the track. You simply cannot group all of the tracks together to figure out who will be good this week.
Sonoma is one of the toughest road course tracks on the schedule. It has a lot of elevation changes and a lot of tight corners. The Cup Series will run the carousel this week and that will add more difficulty to the track.
I like to focus on the drivers who are good at Sonoma since this is a unique track. The Cup Series will use the 750 HP aero package for the first time at Sonoma, so we should factor in some of the stats from the road course races in that package too.
Here are the stats you need to know for the Toyota Save Mart 350…
Driver Rating at Sonoma since 2018
Driver Rating is always a good stat to use because it incorporates a little bit of everything throughout the race and paints a picture of which drivers had the fast cars.
Driver Rating at Road Courses in 750 HP Aero Package
The switch to the 750 HP aero package will cause the driver to bring more speed into the corners and require the drivers to out-brake their competitors, but not to over-cook the brakes. It is going to be difficult if a driver is not a good road course racer this week. This chart shows which drivers have been good in this aero package.
