NASCAR One & Done Pick for Richmond

Facebooktwitter

The Cup Series will once again go racing on Easter, but this year it is a night race at Richmond Raceway. The teams will use the new short track aero package that was introduced earlier this season at Phoenix. The new aero package did not change the racing too much, but it was clear that the Toyota’s had the advantage in the race. It should be fun to see if the Toyota’s will dominate the Toyota Owners 400, or will we see another manufacturer step up their game Sunday night? The Toyota Owners 400 can be seen Sunday at 7p.m. ET on FOX.

The One & Done picks were just “pretty good” last week. I used Tyler Reddick in the games where you can only use a driver once. He dominated the last two races at COTA, so I figured Reddick would do it again. The field caught up to Reddick, but he still finished 5th in the race. Ty Gibbs was my pick for the games that reset at the end of the regular season. Gibbs had the fastest car in practice and he had some success on the road courses in 2023. Gibbs was able to finish the race in 3rd place. Shane van Gisbergen was the pick in the games where you can use a driver more than once throughout the season. I expected a lot more from SVG. He just could never get his rhythm down in the race. A speeding penalty put him back in the pack and he finished the race in 21st place.

Here are the picks for the Toyota Owners 400….

ONE & DONE CONTESTS

This pick is for games where you can only use a driver once throughout the season.

TODD GILLILAND will be my pick in games where you can use a driver once throughout the season. I was planning on using Denny Hamlin or Martin Truex Jr. in this spot, but I want to save them or the races when they dominate practice and qualify up front. It was really hard to tell which cars really have the speed for Sunday night’s race, so I am not going to use one of my top drivers. I will take a chance with Gilliland. He finished 15th in this race last year and he finished 17th earlier this season at Phoenix. I will gladly take a top-15 finish from the No. 38 car on Easter.

* I would use ALEX BOWMAN if I could, but I already used the No. 48 car. Bowman did scrape the wall though in qualifying. If he goes to the back, then switch back to Todd Gilliland.

ONE & DONE (REGULAR SEASON/PLAYOFF GAMES)

There are some One & Done Contests that reset when the playoffs start. That means you only need to use 26 Drivers for the regular season and then 10 drivers for the playoffs. We can be more aggressive in these types of One & Done Contests.

ALEX BOWMAN will be my pick in games that reset at the end of the regular season. Richmond has been a good track for Bowman. He won at Richmond in 2021 and he finished 8th in both spring races at Richmond in the Gen-7 car. Bowman was the fastest on the 15-lap, 20-lap and 25-lap speed charts in practice. His car is one of the fastest on the long runs. Bowman finished 4th in his last two races (Bristol and COTA), so he is on a bit of a hot streak. This is a good race to take a chance with Bowman.

ONE & DONE (USE A DRIVER MORE THAN ONCE)

There are some One & Done games that are not really “One & Done.” I play in a league where you can use a driver twice and another league where you can use a driver three times during the season. The picks posted below are for these types of contests (I am going to base these picks on being able to use a driver twice during the 2024 season)

MARTIN TRUEX JR. will be my pick in games where you can use a driver more than once during the 2024 season. Truex has been at his best on the short, flat tracks in the Gen-7 car. He finished every race he has ever started at Richmond in a Joe Gibbs Toyota in the top-11. His average finishing position in those 9 races is 4th. The No. 19 car looks fast again this weekend. Truex did not set the track on fire in practice, but his group was at a severe disadvantage. I am sure his car will be fast under the lights at Richmond.

Good luck Sunday!
