The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series competes at Dover International Speedway Sunday. There are only 8 races left in the season and most fantasy teams are running low on allocations with their top drivers (if not you are probably not very high in your league standings).
I wrote earlier this week in my Yahoo Fantasy Auto Racing article that I have a plan for my picks. Drivers perform well at some tracks while they struggle at others. I am using some of the big name drivers this week but do not be afraid, I will have enough good drivers to get us through the race at Homestead.
Here are my picks for Dover…
Jimmie Johnson (9): I cannot believe I have not use Johnson at all this season. The No. 48 team usually catches fire this time of year, so maybe it is a good thing I have allocations left with Johnson. Dover is the best track for Johnson. He has 11 wins at this track, including the last race in June. He starts 17th Sunday but I am not worried about his starting position. Johnson won the June race from the 14th starting position. Johnson was 2nd fastest in practice. I will use the No. 48 car this week and save the No. 78 and No. 18 for the larger tracks.
Group A Rankings: 1) Kyle Busch, 2) Martin Truex Jr., 3) Jimmie Johnson, 4) Kevin Harvick, 5) Matt Kenseth, 6) Denny Hamlin, 7) Brad Keselowski, 8) Joey Logano, 9) Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Kyle Larson (2): Larson said on NASCAR America last Wednesday that Dover is his favorite and best track. He said, “For some reason the track sets up perfectly for my driving style.” I agree with him. Larson has been awesome at the Monster Mile so I am not afraid of using one of my last two allocations with him. He started 5th and led 241 laps in the June race. Larson starts 3rd this week so maybe he can lead over 300 laps. He is that good here. Larson was 4th fastest with the 5th fastest 10-lap average speed in final practice. He is my pick to win this week.
Chase Elliott (3): Hendrick Motorsports always performs well at Dover and Elliott has been their best driver this season. Elliott has competed at the Monster Mile three times and his worst finish is 5th. His average finishing position at the track is 3.6. Elliott had the fastest car in final practice with the 2nd-best 10-lap average speed. This is a great race to use an allocation with the No. 24 car.
Group B Rankings: 1) Kyle Larson, 2) Chase Elliott, 3) Jamie McMurray, 4) Kurt Busch, 5) Ryan Blaney, 6) Kasey Kahne, 7) Ryan Newman, 8) Clint Bowyer, 9) Aric Almirola, 10) Ricky Stenhouse Jr., 11) Austin Dillon, 12) Trevor Bayne, 13) Paul Menard, 14) Danica Patrick, 15) AJ Allmendinger, 16) Chris Buescher
Daniel Suarez (2): The Toyota’s have had a lot of speed this summer and it should continue in the fall. Suarez finished 6th in his first race at the Monster Mile and he usually improves in his second trip to the race track. Suarez will race the Xfinity Series race Saturday and he should gain some knowledge as to how the new tire Goodyear brought to the track will perform in the race. I expect a top-10 finish from Suarez Sunday. The No. 19 car starts 5th this week.
Group C Rankings: 1) Daniel Suarez, 2) Erik Jones, 3) Ty Dillon, 4) David Ragan, 5) Michael McDowell, 6) Landon Cassill
Good luck this week!
