The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series has a unique schedule for the race this week at Sonoma. Usually the series has a practice and qualifying on Friday, followed by the final practice Saturday morning. This week all practices were held on Friday and qualifying will be Saturday.
Yahoo Fantasy Auto Racing does not lock their rosters until the day that qualifying is held. So this week we got two see two practices before our lineups must be selected early Saturday morning.
Group A: I am going for max points this week. I am using Kyle Busch for the race and Martin Truex Jr. for qualifying points. Busch has one of the best cars on the long run and should be fast Sunday. Truex has the car to beat but I am down to 5 allocations with the No. 78 car. I cannot use him every week, so I hope he wins the pole and lets Busch win the race. The winner of the pole has not won at Sonoma since 2004 (Jeff Gordon).
I also like Kevin Harvick. He looks really fast but I am down to 6 allocations with the No. 4 car. I would still use Busch over Harvick if I had to choose. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is a good allocations saver driver from this group.
Group B: I am going for max points in this group as well. I am down to 3 allocations with Kyle Larson but you do not lose allocations if you do not use the driver in the race. So I am using Larson for qualifying points. He had the fastest car in Final Practice and has a great chance to win the pole.
My final 3 drivers are AJ Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer and Kurt Busch. Allmendinger said this is the best car he has ever had at Sonoma. That is a huge statement. The Stewart-Haas racing cars look very fast and they have great stats at this track.
Jamie McMurray will be a great pick as well but I am down to 3 allocations with the No. 1 car. I still like the drivers I have listed above a little better than McMurray.
My allocation savers in Group B are Chris Buescher and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Both drivers look very good in practice. I am not sure how they will run in traffic though.
Group C: There is only one good choice in Group C this week. Michael McDowell is a good road course racer and he said this is the best car he has ever had at Sonoma. He should finish in the top 15 Sunday.
I will give Billy Johnson a spot on the team this week. His chances of making my starting lineup are slim but he looked decent in practice.
I would not recommend Erik Jones, Daniel Suarez or Ty Dillon. And please do not ask me what I think about Boris Said. If he finishes in the top 20 he will celebrate like he won the race.
Here is my updated lineup for Yahoo Fantasy Auto Racing…
GROUP A: Martin Truex Jr. (5), Kyle Busch (8)
GROUP B: Kyle Larson (3), Clint Bowyer (5), Kurt Busch (7), AJ Allmendinger (9)
GROUP C: Michael McDowell (8), Billy Johnson (9)
Good luck this week!
