Fantasy NASCAR Preview for Chicago

Facebooktwitter

The NASCAR Cup Series will join the Xfinity Series on the road course in Chicago this weekend. Rain ruined the inaugural race in Chicago last year. Hopefully Mother Nature cooperates this weekend and we get to see what the most talented drivers in the world can do through the streets of down town Chicago. Last year’s race was pretty exciting, despite the rain. I expect fireworks in the Windy City this weekend.

CHICAGO SCHEDULE

NASCAR wanted the drivers to have as much time as possible with their families during the 4th of July week, so they will be using a condensed schedule this weekend. The Xinity Series will practice and qualify Saturday morning. They are scheduled to race Saturday evening. The Cup Series will practice and qualify Saturday afternoon and then race Sunday evening.

Here is the schedule for the races at Chicago…

RACE RECAP AT CHICAGO

It will be tough to learn much from the race in Chicago last year. The race was delayed for a monsoon that hit the track. NASCAR did their best to dry the track and started the race on wet weather tires. Some of the top drivers spun out on lap one (Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch). The early portion of the race was dominated by Tyler Reddick, Christopher Bell, Kyle Larson and Shane van Gisbergen. They clearly had the best cars in the field. Reddick, Bell, Larson and SVG decided to pit on lap 47 so that they would have enough fuel to make it until the end of the race (lap 78). NASCAR screwed them when they announced the race would be shortened because of darkness. They lost all of their track position and the drivers who stay out were rewarded. Theese drivers included Chase Elliott, Justin Haley, Kyle Busch and Austin Cindric. Track position did not matter for SVG. He was able to come from mid-pack and win the race.

The best drivers in the race included Christopher Bell, Shane van Gisbergen, Tyler Reddick, Kyle Larson, Ty Gibbs, Michael McDowell and Justin Haley

Stage 1 Results: 1. Christopher Bell, 2. Tyler Reddick, 3. Shane van Gisbergen, 4. Martin Truex Jr., 5. Michael McDowell, 6. Daniel Suarez, 7. Kyle Larson, 8. AJ Allmendinger, 9. Ty Gibbs, 10. Justin Haley

Stage 2 Results: 1. Christopher Bell, 2. Kyle Larson, 3. Tyler Reddick, 4. Shane van Gisbergen, 5. Michael McDowell, 6. Ty Gibbs, 7. Daniel Suarez, 8. Martin Truex Jr., 9. AJ Allmendinger, 10. Chase Briscoe

FANTASY STATS FOR CHICAGO

The Chicago Street Course is unlike any other road course on the schedule. Shane van Gisbergen proved that last year when he won the race. SVG has a lot of experience on road courses and it was the first time for most of the Cup Series stars. It is also hard to learn much from last year’s race since it was delayed by rain and shortened by darkness. NASCAR’s decision to end the race at lap 75 really screwed some of the best drivers in the race (Christopher Bell) and made their stats look bad, when they were actually some of the best drivers in the field. I will still use the stats from last year’s race and add in the stats from COTA and Sonoma this year to help handicap the Grant Park 165.

Here are the stats from the race at Chicago last year and the road course races in 2024, sorted by Driver Rating…
