The Xfinity Series will join the Cup Series at Phoenix this week. The “Kyle Busch Retirement Tour” ended last week when Rowdy finished fourth at his home track in Las Vegas. Busch will return to the Xfinity Series to see if he can add win #103 to his Xfinity Series resume. It will be fun to see if the Xfinity Series regulars can keep Rowdy Busch out of Victory Lane this week. The United Rentals 200 can be seen Saturday 4:30 pm ET on FS1.
XFINITY SERIES PRACTICE / QUALIFYING
The Xfinity Series had a short practice session Saturday and then they lined up the cars for qualifying. There were a lot of teams who made some long runs in practice so we can probably use this information for our picks today.
Here are the lap times from the practice Saturday at Phoenix…
DRIVER RANKINGS FOR PHOENIX
WHAT TO DO WITH KYLE BUSCH
Kyle Busch was priced $2,400 more than any driver in the field last week and he did not return value. Busch only led four laps, scored nine fastest laps and finished fourth. That was good enough for 52 DK Points. That is not bad, but it is not enough to justify paying over $2K than any driver in the field.
Kyle Busch is $1,600 more than any driver in the field. That price is more reasonable, but it is still pretty steep. Busch needs to lead about 65% of the laps in order to return value. He may do it. Busch has finished inside the top-three in his last 10 Xfinity Series races at Phoenix. That includes seven trips to Victory Lane, averaged 142 laps led per race and has an average finishing position of 1.5. That is domination.
Kyle Busch had problems with his car in practice. The team said it was an electrical issue in the gauges, but it did not change the drivability of the car. Busch posted the second-fastest speed, but the team decided to skip qualifying to fix the car. Busch will start from the back and is almost a lock for all lineups (He is a lock for Cash Contest lineups).
* Kyle Busch will start the race on sticker tires and the rest of the field will start on their qualifying tires.
STRATEGY FOR PHOENIX
The race Saturday is scheduled for 200 laps (200 miles). That means there are 50 points available for leading laps and 90 points available for fastest laps (140 dominator points). This race tends to be a one-dominator race with two sub-dominators. The main dominator typically leads 112 laps and scores 42 fastest laps (46.9 dominator points). One sub-dominator leads roughly 40 laps and scores 42 fastest laps (28.9 dominator points). The last sub-dominator leads 30 laps and scores 22 fastest laps (17.4 dominator points). We are going to need the top dominator in our lineup Saturday it is likely to be Kyle Busch.
The drivers with the best chance to score dominator points today are: Kyle Busch, Cole Custer, Justin Allgaier, Chandler Smith and John H. Nemecheck
The drivers with the best chance to score place differential points include Kyle Busch, Parker Kligerman, Connor Mosack, Ryan Truex, Brandon Jones, Sammy Smith, Brett Moffitt, Anthony Alfredo, Jeffrey Earnhardt and Bayley Currey
DRAFTKINGS CASH CONTEST LINEUP
