Fantasy Golf Picks for Wyndham Championship

Facebooktwitter

The 2024 PGA Tour season will end its regular season this week with a trip to Greensboro, North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship. This is the last chance for the golfers to secure their spot in the top-70 FedEx Playoff rankings and earn their way into the FedEx Cup next week. This is going to be another wild week on the PGA Tour.

Most of the top golfers on the PGA Tour played in Paris last week in the Olympics. The only golfer who ranks in the top-15 in the World Golf Rankings in the field this week is Brian Harman (15th). Only 12 of the top-40 golfers in the World Golf Rankings will tee it up this week, so this tournament is wide up. The leaderboard at the 2023 Wyndham Championship was dominated by golfers in the $7K price range (Lucas Glover, Russell Henley, Byeong Hun An and Keegan Bradley). We may see the same this week.

COURSE BREAKDOWN

Sedgefield Country Club is 7,127 yard par 70 course. The PGA Tour ends the season with a pretty easy course. The last five winners have shot 20-under-par in this tournament. There are not a lot of hazards so there is a lot of trouble to cause high scores. Most golfers will not even bring the driver out of the bag. It will come down to accuracy off the tee and accuracy into the greens to set up short putts.

WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP STRATEGY

This is the best week of the season to take a chance with a long-shot. The last five winners of the Wyndham Championship have all opened at 60-1 odds or higher. Heck, Jim Herman won the Wyndham Championship in 2020 at 600-1 odds. I really like Sungjae Im this week, but history suggest a golfer from the $7K or $6K price range will be your winner. I will be using a lot of the golfers from the $7K price range in my core this week for the Tournament Contest lineups.

It is tough to predict which long-shot is going to hit the bull’s-eye, so I will play a balanced lineup for my Cash Contest in the Wyndham Championship. There are a lot of golfers in the $8K price range who have a great chance to finish in the top-10. I want as many of these golfers in my Cash Contest lineup as possible this week.

* The weather forecast looks horrible this week. I would not be surprised if either the morning or afternoon has a huge advantage, but it is hard to tell right now which it will be. I recommend checking out the hour-by-hour forecast Wednesday night to see if either tee time gets a clear path to play.

DRAFTKINGS CASH CONTEST

BRIAN HARMAN ($9,300): Harman is the top golfer in the world golf rankings in this tournament and we get him at a discount this week. Sedgefield Country Club is a great course for Harman. It is a short course, where accuracy off-the-tee and into the greens are important. Harman is not a long hitter, but he is accurate. Harman could win this week if his putter heats up.

AARON RAI ($8,800): Rai is my pick to win, so of course he is in my Cash Contest lineup. Rai is a cheaper version of Brain Harman. Rai ranks in the top-five in Accuracy Off-the-Tee and SG Approach. He also ranks No. 1 in Proximity to the hole. A golfer does not need to be a great putter if he is knocking down the flag with his approach shots. That is what Rai does. The stats for Rai this week are almost the exact same for Lucas Glover who won last year. I like his chances to win Sunday (Or whenever they finish this tournament).

THOMAS DETRY ($8,400): I have been playing Detry a lot this year, so why stop now? He has made the cut in 12 of his last 13 tournaments, so the form is there for Detry to play well this week. Detry finished 21st in this tournament last year, so he has the course history too. Detry does not look great in the key stats, but he ranks highly in Birdie of Better %. Detry should score well for your Cash Contest lineup.

ROBERT MACINTYRE ($8,300): I always do a lot of research to see who everyone in the Fantasy Golf industry is talking about and only Pat Mayo is talking about Macintyre. I agree with him. Macintyre ranks No. 1 on the short courses, where accuracy is a key stat. He won the Canadian Open, finished 8th in the PGA Championship, 16th at the Travelers and won the Scottish Open. All of those are short courses like Sedgefield Country Club. I would not be surprised if Macintyre won his third tournament this week.

NICOLAI HOJGAARD ($8,200): I had a lot of shares of Hojgaard last week in the Olympics, so I watched him a lot during the tournament. It looked like he is dialed in and has the form to win this week. Accuracy is a big part of his game. Hojgaard ranks No. 5 in SG Approach and No. 7 in Proximity to the hole. I just need Hojgaard to play like he did last week and we should see his name near the top of the leaderboard.

ANDREW PUTNAM ($7,000): I really wanted to use Andrew Novak at the bottom of my Cash Contest lineup, but I could not make his price fit. I will pivot to Putnam. He is trending up after a poor season on the PGA Tour. Putnam finished 21st at the Barracuda and 19th at the 3M Open two weeks ago. He has made the cut in the last two Wyndham Championships, so he has the course history to play well this week. You can also use C.T. Pan if you do not trust Putnam in your lineup.

DRAFTKINGS TOURNAMENT CONTEST LINEUP

SUNGJAE IM ($10,700): I will pay up and use Sungjae in my Tournament Contest lineup. His recent form suggests that Sungjae will finish near the top of the leaderboard Sunday. He is one of the most accurate golfers on the PGA Tour and he has finished three of his last five Wyndham Championships in the top-10. He is the best fit for this tournament, so I will “eat the chalk” with Sungjae this week.

CAM DAVIS ($8,900): Everyone in the Fantasy Golf Industry has been hyping up Aaron Rai this week, so I will pivot to Cam Davis. He won a little over a month ago on a similar course at the Travelers Championship. He is also one of the best golfers in the rain (There really isn’t a stat to measure how a golfer plays in poor conditions, but I have it written down in my notes to play Davis in poor weather, so he must have had success in the rain before). I will trust my notes and play Davis this week.

MAVERICK MCNEALY ($8,100): I was surprised to see how high McNealy ranked in the key stats this week. McNealy ranks No. 23 in SG Tee-to-Green, No. 3 in Scrambling, No. 5 in SG Putting (Bermuda) and No. 11 overall in the key stats. He just finished 3rd two weeks ago at the 3M Open. I will trust the stats and hope his form he had in Minneapolis travels to North Carolina this week.

MAX GREYSERMAN ($7,600): Sometimes we need to keep Fantasy Golf simple and play the golfers in the best form. Greyserman is one of those golfers. He finished 2nd two weeks ago at the 3M Open, 13th at the Barracuda Championship and 21st at the Scottish Open. Greyserman ranks No. 1 in SG Off-the-Tee, No. 10 in SG Approach, No. 22 in SG Putting (Bermuda) and No. 5 overall in the key stats. Greyserman is just playing too well right now to fade.

PATRICK FISHBURN ($7,200): Everything I wrote about Max Greyserman can be said for Fishburn. He finished 6th two weeks ago in the 3M Open, 3rd at the Barracuda Championship and 15th at the ISCO Championship. That is a pretty good month of golf. Fishburn ranks No. 8 is SG Tee-to-Green, No. 3 in SG Approach, No. 12 in SG Putting (Bermuda) and No. 3 overall in the key stats. Fishburn is too cheap to pass up at the Wyndham Championship.

ANDREW NOVAK ($7,100): I bet Novak to win this week, so of course I am going to play him in DFS. Novak has made 10 of his last 11 cuts on the PGA Tour. Novak ranks No. 2 when I run the stats for comparable courses. He finished 7th at the John Deere Classic, 20th in the Rocket Mortgage Classic and 14th in the RBC Canadian Open. Novak also ranks No. 5 in the key stats this week. He has a good chance to finish in the top-10 at only $7,100.

PGATOUR.COM FANTASY PICKS

This is the ninth tournament in Segment 3. This is the toughest segment to navigate. We had two signature events the third major (U.S. Open), the last major (Open Championship) and the three FedEx Playoff events. The Top golfers in the world will be playing a lot over the summer, so we need to save some of our top golfers for the playoffs.
