Fantasy NASCAR Preview for Dover

Facebooktwitter

The NASCAR Cup Series will join the Xfinity Series at Dover Motor Speedway. The non-Superspeedway races this year have become a battle between the drivers from Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing. Will that trend continue or will another team be able to conquer the Monster Mile? Martin Truex Jr. won at Dover last year and Chase Elliott won in 2022. It will likely be hard to beat the top-two teams Sunday.

DOVER SCHEDULE

The Cup Series and Xfinity Series took a week off from practicing last week because they were racing on a Superspeedway track. Both Series will be back to a normal schedule this weekend. The Xfinity Series will have 20-minutes to shake down their cars Friday before their race Saturday afternoon. The Cup Series will have their 20-minute practice session Saturday morning before their race Sunday afternoon.

Here is the schedule for the races at Dover…

RACE RECAP AT DOVER

Kyle Busch won the pole for the race at Dover last year. He led the first 24-laps, but Rowdy had a speeding penalty which sent him to the back of the field. William Byron took over in Stage 1. Byron led 193 laps, won Stage 1 and finished second in Stage 2. Byron finished 4th in the race. Kyle Larson had one of the fastest cars, but Ross Chastain flat dumped the No. 5 car. Larson finished 32nd. Martin Truex Jr. and Ross Chastain saw their cars come to life in Stage 2. Chastain led 98 laps, won Stage 2 and finished 2nd in the race. Truex led 68 laps, scored 9 Stages Points and went to Victory Lane for a series-high fourth time at Dover.

There were only five cautions for wrecks and debris in the race and 19 lead changes. The best cars in the race were the No. 24 (William Byron), No. 1 (Ross Chastain), No. 12 (Ryan Blaney), No. 19 (Martin Truex Jr.), No. 11 (Denny Hamlin) and No. 20 (Christopher Bell). Kyle Larson also looked fast until he was wrecked.

Stage 1 Results: 1. William Byron, 2. Denny Hamlin, 3. Ryan Blaney, 4. Brad Keselowski, 5. Ross Chastain, 6. Chris Buescher, 7. Christopher Bell, 8. Kevin Harvick, 9. Martin Truex Jr., 10. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

Stage 2 Results: 1. Ross Chastain, 2. William Byron, 3. Ryan Blaney, 4. Martin Truex Jr., 5. Denny Hamlin, 6. Ty Gibbs, 7. Chris Buescher, 8. Tyler Reddick, 9. Chase Elliott, 10. Christopher Bell

FANTASY PREVIEW FOR DOVER

The Cup Series will use the intermediate track aero package this week. They will not use the short track package that was used at Phoenix and Richmond. It is going to be tough to score well this week unless we load our lineups with the drivers from Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing. Kyle Larson and William Byron have been fast at every non-Superspeedway track. They will be fast again this week. Dover is one of the best tracks for Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman. I expect the No. 9 and No. 48 to run up front with the No. 5 and No. 24 cars Sunday.

Martin Truex Jr. won the race at Dover last year and Denny Hamlin has run up front in every race this year. These two drivers are going to be tough to beat Sunday. Christopher Bell finished 4th and 6th in his two races at Dover in the Gen-7 car and Ty Gibbs had one of his best races last year at Dover. All of the Joe Gibbs Racing cars should be good his week.

The two drivers who can compete with the Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing drivers are Ryan Blaney and Ross Chastain. Blaney qualified 3rd, finished 3rd in both Stages and finished 3rd at Dover last year. Chastain finished 2nd and 3rd in his two races at Dover in the Gen-7 car.

I plan to use the drivers listed above for my lineups this week.

FANTASY STATS FOR DOVER

I typically use the data from the race at Bristol to help handicap the race at Dover. Both tracks are high-banked, concrete tracks and NASCAR using the same aero package for both races. I am not using any of the stats from the race at Bristol this year unless I hear that Goodyear is bringing the tire used at Bristol to the track in Dover. The tire used at Bristol completely changed the racing. It will do the same at Dover, if it is used Sunday. I haven’t seen a Goodyear tire report yet, so I will assume NASCAR is using the same tire at Dover that they used last year.

I used the data from the two races at Dover in the Gen-7 car for the key stats this week. Here are the top drivers from the two races at the Monster Mile, sorted by Driver Rating…
