NASCAR One & Done Pick for Sonoma

Facebooktwitter

The NASCAR Cup Series will head to Sonoma Raceway this weekend for their second road course race in the 2024 season. Sonoma always puts on a good race, but this year the track has a fresh new look. Sonoma was repaved over the off-season, so it should be a bit faster than it was in the past. The teams had a 50-minute practice session to figure out their setups for Sunday’s race, so it feels a little “old-school” in wine country this weekend. The Toyota / Save Mart 350 can be seen Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

I was worried about playing Kyle Busch in the One & Done and games where you can use a driver once. I thought about changing it to Michael McDowell or Austin Cindric after I posted the pick. Hind sight is 20/20 and I got burned by Busch again when he finished 35th. Joey Logano did not live up to his practice speed, but I will take a fifth-place finish from Logano in the games that reset at the end of the regular season. Christopher Bell was my pick in games where you can use a driver more than once. He should have won the race, but his engine dropped a cylinder with only 30 laps to go. I do appreciate Martin Truex Jr. pushing Bell to a seventh-place finish though.

Here are the picks for the Toyota / Save Mart 350 ….

ONE & DONE CONTESTS

This pick is for games where you can only use a driver once throughout the season.

DANIEL SUAREZ will be my pick in games where you can use a driver once throughout the season. My Amigo hasn’t been very good this year, but a trip to California could be what he needs to get his season back on track. Suarez won in the Gen-7 car at Sonoma in 2022. It wasn’t a fluke. He outraced the field on his way to Victory Lane. The repaved has totally changed this race. It is probably the most unpredictable road course race of the season. I will save my top drivers for the more predictable races and take a chance with Suarez Sunday.

ONE & DONE (REGULAR SEASON/PLAYOFF GAMES)

There are some One & Done Contests that reset when the playoffs start. That means you only need to use 26 Drivers for the regular season and then 10 drivers for the playoffs. We can be more aggressive in these types of One & Done Contests.

AJ ALLMENDINGER will be my pick in games that reset at the end of the regular season. Allmendinger had a lot of speed in practice and he qualified 11th for the race. That is nothing new for Allmendinger. Can Allmendinger run a full race without any problems? That has been tough for Allmendinger in his career. He is a boom or bust driver. When he is good, he is really good. When Allmendinger is bad, he is really bad. I will hope the “good” Allmendinger shows up Sunday. I was going to use Allmendinger at Watkins Glen, but that is a playoff race this year. I will take a chance with Allmendinger in this format at Sonoma.

ONE & DONE (USE A DRIVER MORE THAN ONCE)

There are some One & Done games that are not really “One & Done.” I play in a league where you can use a driver twice and another league where you can use a driver three times during the season. The picks posted below are for these types of contests (I am going to base these picks on being able to use a driver twice during the 2024 season).

CHASE ELLIOTT will be my pick in games where you can use a driver more than once during the 2024 season. Elliott used to be the master of the road courses in the Cup Series. He has been good, but not great on these tracks in the Gen-7 car. It looks like Elliott is starting to get his mojo back. Elliott posted the fifth-fastest speed in practice and qualified fourth for the race. He finished fifth, eighth and second in his last three races at Sonoma. Elliott should finish in the top-five, with the upside to win the race Sunday.

Good luck Sunday!
