Driver Group Game Picks Dover

The Cup Series will travel to Dover Motor Speedway this week to try to tame the Monster Mile. Dover is a high-banked, concrete, intermediate track. NASCAR eliminated one race from Dover because the racing hasn’t been very good. 2024 has been the season when fans should “expect the unexpected,” so maybe we will get a fantastic race at Dover. The Wurth 400 can be seen Sunday at 2 p.m. ET on FS1.

The 2024 season has been dominated by Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing. I doubt that trend will stop any time soon, and especially not at the Monster Mile. Chase Elliott won the race at Dover in the Gen-7 car in 2022 and Martin Truex Jr. won the race last year. William Byron led the most laps at Dover last year and four of the top-six drivers were from Hendrick Motorsports or Joe Gibbs Racing. It will be a good idea to use the drivers from these two teams in your Driver Group Game lineups Sunday.

Here are the picks for the Wurth 400

WILLIAM BYRON (8): Byron has been the best driver in 2024 and he dominated the last race at Dover. Byron qualified 8th, led 193 laps, won Stage 1, finished 2nd in Stage 2 and he finished 4th in the race. Byron has not been to Victory Lane “yet” at the Monster Mile, but he has finished 4th in three out of the last four races at the track. There is a good chance that Byron will dominate the race Sunday like he did last year at Dover.

MARTIN TRUEX JR. (8): I had a hard time deciding if I should play two drivers from Hendrick Motorsports in Group A or pair William Byron with a driver from Joe Gibbs Racing. I decided to go with Truex at one of his many home tracks. Truex won the last race at Dover. His average finishing position at the Monster Mile since he joined Joe Gibbs Racing is 5.5. That is a large sample size, with a lot of great results. Truex should have a good chance to finish in the top-five again Sunday.

(OTHER PICK) CHASE ELLIOTT (9): Is Elliott back? Elliott used to be the top driver at Hendrick Motorsports, but he has really struggled over the last year. NASCAR’s most popular driver is starting to get back to his old form and that is bad news for the competition. Elliott won at Dover in Gen-7 car in 2022. Dover has been one of the best intermediate tracks for Elliott. He would be a good driver to pair with William Byron if you are not afraid to play two drivers from Hendrick Motorsports in Group A this week.

GROUP A DRIVER RANKINGS: 1) William Byron 2) Martin Truex Jr. 3) Chase Elliott 4) Denny Hamlin 5) Kyle Larson 6) Christopher Bell 7) Ryan Blaney 8) Kyle Busch

ROSS CHASTAIN (8): Do you want to use the best driver in the Gen-7 car at Dover in your lineup Sunday? Then you need to use Chastain. He led 86 laps, scored 12 Stage Points and finished 3rd at Dover in 2022. Chastain led 98 laps, scored 16 Stage Points and finished 2nd at the Monster Mile last year. This is the best track for Chastain so you need to have the No. 1 car in your lineup.

ALEX BOWMAN (8): You cannot have too many Hendirck Motorsports drivers in your lineup this week. That includes Bowman. He did not race at Dover last year, but Bowman qualified 6th, scored 8 Stage Points and finished 5th in 2022. He also won the race at the Monster Mile in 2021 and finished 5th in 2020. Bowman has an average finishing position of 6th at Dover since 2018 (6 races). This is one of his best tracks, so you need to take a chance with the No. 48 car this weekend.

TY GIBBS (7): Gibbs was only “OK” at Dover last year. He started 24th, scored 5 Stage Points and finished 13th. I am not too concerned with Gibb’s stats at Dover last year. He had success at this track in the Xfinity Series and he seems to be a new driver this year. Gibbs ran well on the intermediate tracks at Las Vegas and Texas. He should be a good pick for your Driver Group Game lineup at Dover.

CHRIS BUESCHER (8): Can the RFK Racing drivers find the speed they had at Dover last year? Buescher will be one of the best picks from Group B if they can. Buescher qualified 5th, scored 10 Stage Points and finished 9th at Dover last year. He also finished 8th at Dover in the Gen-7 car in 2022. Buescher has been the best driver at qualifying in Gen-7 car at Dover. He won the pole in 2022 and he qualified 5th last year. At least Buescher should score your team bonus points for qualifying Saturday.

(OTHER PICK) RICKY STENHOUSE JR. (9): How lucky are you feeling this week? I do not feel lucky enough to get a good finish out of Stenhouse Sunday, but the stats suggest the No. 47 car will be a good play at Dover. Stenhouse finished 2nd at the Monster Mile in the Gen-7 car in 2022. He started 9th and finished 15th last year. I would not be surprised if Stenhouse finished in the top-10 Sunday.

GROUP B DRIVER RANKINGS: 1) Ross Chastain 2) Alex Bowman 3) Ty Gibbs 4) Chris Buescher 5) Brad Keselowski 6) Bubba Wallace 7) Ricky Stenhouse Jr. 8) Joey Logano

RYAN PREECE (8): This is a tough week to find a good driver for Group C. There really isn’t any driver who stands out in the group. I will take a chance with Preece. He is typically good on the high-banked concrete tracks. He finished 17th at Dover last year. Preece should have a decent chance to finish in the top-15 at the Monster Mile Sunday.

CHASE BRISCOE (6): Briscoe has been the best driver in Group C and I am quickly running out of allocations with the No. 14 car. I really do not want to use another start with Briscoe, but I need a good backup plan in Group C, if Ryan Preece doesn’t live up to expectations this weekend. Briscoe has an average finishing position of 12th this year on the non-Superspeedway tracks. He should finish around his average Sunday.

(OTHER CHOICE) CARSON HOCEVAR (9): It may not be a bad idea to give Chase Briscoe a break this week and take a chance with Hocevar. He has been pretty good on the non-Superspeedway tracks this year. Hocevar finished 15th at Las Vegas, 15th at Phoenix, 17th at Martinsville and 10th at Texas. I doubt Hocevar will finish inside the top-15 Sunday, but he should be able to finish between 16th and 20th. That may be the best in Group C.

GROUP C DRIVER RANKINGS: 1) Ryan Preece 2) Chase Briscoe 3) Carson Hocevar 4) Noah Gragson 5) John H. Nemechek
