Fantasy NASCAR Preview for Atlanta

Facebooktwitter

The Daytona 500 is finally in the books and now the Cup Series will join the Truck Series and Xfinity Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway. This race used to be run in late March, but now it will be run in February. The cooler temperatures in Atlanta should add grip and speed to the track. The races on the new surface Atlanta hasn’t been great, but hopefully the track has worn out a bit and will allow for more passing in this weekend’s races.

ATLANTA SCHEDULE

The races at Atlanta will use the Superspeedway aero-package, so that means there will be no practice in any of the series this week. The cars /trucks will go through inspection, lay down a qualifying lap and then race. There is no doubt the Truck Series needs some practice time. Their races have almost become unwatchable, but I do not make the rules. Here is the schedule for the on-track activities at Atlanta Motor Speedway this week…

FANTASY STATS FOR ATLANTA

There have been four races in the Gen-7 car on the new surface at Atlanta. The track is unique. It is 1.5-miles in length, but the Cup Series will use their Superspeedway aero-package this week (510 HP with a 7” spoiler). We do not need to focus on the stats from Daytona and Talladega to help predict this race. Daytona and Talladega are much larger tracks with more room to make passes. We have four races of data to work with from Atlanta and that is what I plan to use for my picks this week.

Here are the stats from the four races using the Gen-7 car on the new surface at Atlanta (sorted by Driver Rating)…

The Toyota’s and the Fords are racing a new car this year. The speeds they had last year on the Superspeedways does not look like the speeds they will have in 2024. The Camry XSE has better handling and the new nose allows the car to work better in the draft. The new Ford Mustang Dark Horse still has speed with their Yates engines, but they are not as dominant on the Superspeedways as they were in 2022 and 2023. I will factor this information into the picks this week.
